On the Road to Tiger

Or "A tutorial to get your DVD library back once on Mac OS X v10.4":

* If you chose to upgrade from Mac OS X "Panther" (or "Jaguar"), you shouldn't have anything to do: your user's account should be preserved, your data still available; you'd only have to launch (and enjoy using) fennel DVDManager under Tiger.

* If you chose to clean install Mac OS X "Tiger" (i.e., through some formatting of your startup volume), be sure you've backup-ed your entire "DVDManager" folder (which is located in your user's account "Library" folder) before running this erasing installation process: you can either use Finder's File > Create Archive of "DVDManager" menu item (good), or our new File > Export DVD Library to Desktop action from fsDM v1.6 (recommended).

Once under Tiger, you'd only have to expand this ZIP archive into your new user's account "Library" folder, for fennel DVDManager to transparently load your data back on its next launch.

Don't hesitate to contact us for any question… We wish you the smartest transition to Tiger ;) !

Hi. Could we start a post on here for 'wish list features for DVDManager 2'? I know I have a few! Or should we just mail them in?

Hi Graham! We currently prefer your feature requests to be directly sent to us. However, time will come when a public forum will be available to our users; we're just not there yet… Thx.

Love this program!

I was using version 1.3 and all was bliss. I updated to version 1.6.1 and when I open the new version, I get this message window:

“Your “~/Library/DVDManager/DVDLibrary.xml” file is not supported by this version. You may choose to overwrite, and thus to lose, the existing file to build a brand new DVD library; or to quit DVDManager.”

I backed up my DVDManager folder (saved it to another location) and decided to see what would happen when I clicked “overwrite.” I get a blank window with no DVD content from my original list I created (491 DVD entries).

I tried to import my previous .XML file, but it won't allow me.

How do I recover or import my previous DVD list file? I don't want to re-enter 491 DVD's.

Thanks you for your attention to my inquiry.
Dann

Hi Dann, and thanks for the kind words. We're glad to hear you appreciate our work!

Regarding the warning you receive, we have to admit it's kind of odd… So, could you please contact us directly by e-mail, and send us your XML file—so that we can test it on our own, and see what happens? Thanks in advance.

Fortunately, you've acted just right in backing your DVD library up before upgrading to v1.6.1… Save those data until we'll get back to you, and you'll then be able to restore them in a way better environment ('cause v1.6.1 is so more advanced than v1.3 ;) !)

Note: And to clarify another aspect of your post, as mentioned in our documentation, the "Import DVD Library…" action is meant to import external data, and not DVDManager's. The process to import DVDManager's data is detailed in the "Solving Problems" section of our electronic help, accessible from the "Help" menu, from within our application.

Bye Dann. Hope to hear from you very soon.

Message for Dann: We did receive your last e-mail, but your provider's mail server seems to prevent us from answering you. It thinks we're spamming you while we're just trying to give you support :( ! Actually, you've sent us the wrong file (< 1 Kb) b/c we don't need the XML file generated by v1.6.1 (which overwrote your data), but your v1.3-based file you've backed up! Thanks for sending us this file, and also for asking your provider to allow our mail exchanges! Bye.

My fault on sending you the incorrect .XML file. I will send the correct file to you and look for your response here in this forum.

I don't understand how you could be blocked from responding to me through my e-mail, but suffice it to say that I live in a very small community and it's likely they block any and all that don't seem to be obvious in name. I will look into it.

In the meantime, I will monitor this post forum to see what you discover.

Thank you for your responses and your patience!
Dann
